Messages from the Mayor and Town Manager
The Town of Oakland held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Friday, Nov. 15. This event offers a great opportunity to recognize all the hard work our volunteers contribute to make this town the wonderful place that we call home. These volunteers give so freely of their time and talents on many boards, which include the Oakland Avenue Charter School Advisory Council and our Police Department. This dinner is also a great time for fellowship and getting to know each other and our staff. It’s so wonderful to be a part of this event every year.
During the dinner, we recognized our Volunteer of the Year – Shane Taylor. Below are my comments regarding his award:
“Our Volunteer of the Year has been active in our town since moving here in 1998 with his family. Even before officially becoming a board member, he was active in serving the Town of Oakland. As a Construction Manager, he has been a huge asset in helping in the area of drainage concerns, and especially with the rebuild of various damaged areas at the Oakland Nature Preserve after one of our major hurricanes.
In November of 2013, he was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Board. He became Vice-Chair in November 2015, and in November of 2017, he became the Planning and Zoning Board Chair, the position he still holds today. With all the growth that Oakland is experiencing, we are grateful for his steady approach to handling the sometimes-challenging P&Z meetings.
In his ‘day job,’ he is working for the Dr. Phillips Foundation to revitalize a 200-acre project near College Park that will include a park, various retail shops and homes. Named the ‘Packing District’, the project centers on an industrial area at Orange Blossom Trail and Princeton Street. Its name is an homage to the canning and packing plant that citrus magnate Dr. Philip Phillips built there in the 1930s.
With grateful appreciation for his years of diligent service and leadership in our Town of Oakland, please join me in congratulating the 2019 Volunteer of the Year, Mr. Shane Taylor!”
I encourage anyone who would like to be involved as a volunteer to visit Town Hall and express your interest. We also encourage residents to attend meetings and town events, such as Light up Oakland/Santa Day on Dec. 7. I hope to see you and your families there!
