Grade Level Goals and Expectations

Some of the Goals and General Expectations for Kindergarten:

Social Goals:

- Responsibility with tools
- Neatness and completion of work
- Listening and following directions the first time they are given
- Being a good friend to all classmates

Learning Goals for Language Arts:

- Mastery of all letters and sounds
- Mastery of 80 % of K sight words
- Reading independently on a C level book
- Be able to write a narrative, informational and opinion piece using sight words, inventive spelling and
  proper conventions.
- Mastery of all 13 phonological skills
- Reading and spelling of CVC words
- Reading Skills: Understanding author/illustrator and their roles, have print awareness, recognize
  characters and setting, retell the main idea and details of a book, be able to make predictions, understand
  fiction vs. non-fiction, compare and contrast two texts, understand cause/effect and be able to draw
  conclusions in a story

Learning Goals for Math:

- Counting to 100 and counting on
- Number sense: more, less, equal to
- Recognize, count and write numbers to 20
- Understanding number lines
- Composing and decomposing numbers
- Simple addition and subtraction including word problems
- 2D and 3D shapes
- Measuring length and weight

Learning Goals for Science:

- Understand parts of the scientific method
- Be able to make predictions and conduct experiments
- Be able to make observations and record data
- Be able to share results
- Major focuses: Plants, Matter, Day & Night, 5 Senses, Sound and Vibration, Forces

Learning Goals for Social Studies:

- Community Helpers
- Holidays
- History - Then and Now, Important people and their characteristics, Timelines
- Geography - Maps, Cardinal Directions, Landforms and Water Forms
- Needs vs. Wants
- US Symbols
- Calendar including Seasons/Seasonal Weather
- Rules and Laws
- Characteristics of being a good citizen and how to resolve conflicts
