Oakland Police Department rolls out high tech Traffic Trailer

The Oakland Police Department is using a new tool to help educate the public, enhance safety and deter crime.

The Department’s mobile Traffic Trailer is being rolled out this week to coincide with a speed limit change on Oakland Avenue, effective today, Feb. 10. Orange County recently approved lowering the speed limit from 45 to 35 between State Road 50 to the City of Winter Garden boundary. The trailer will help drivers to become more aware of their speed in this and other areas of Town.

 “Displaying a driver’s speed has been shown to be an effective tool,” said Police Chief John Peek. “We hope that bringing awareness will make our roads safer for residents and visitors.”

The Traffic Trailer is also equipped with a high-tech license plate reader, which will be helpful in identifying vehicles in Amber or Silver alerts, as well as stolen cars. It was paid for through law enforcement impact fees.

Follow these tips from The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Florida Highway Patrol to stay safe on the road:

  • Florida law requires you to Move Over a lane — when you can safely do so — for stopped law enforcement, emergency, sanitation, utility service vehicles and tow trucks or wreckers.
  • Keep your eyes on the road and focus on driving to ensure everyone can “Arrive Alive!”
  • When “Visibility is Low, Drive Slow.” Smoke, fog and heavy rain can all lower visibility on roads.
  • If you are involved in a crash, stay at the scene and call for help.
  • All motorists should use extra caution when driving around bicyclists, motorcyclists and commercial motor vehicles.
