COVID-19 Update: Student field trips involving air travel suspended immediately
March 10, 2020 - All Central Florida school superintendents continue to carefully monitor the COVID-19 situation. Following a call with the Florida Commissioner of Education this morning and based on his strong recommendations, all student field trips involving air travel will be suspended immediately through the end of the current school year. District and school staff members will work with parents and travel companies on appropriate cancellation arrangements.
While we have been advised by experts that the risk to young people remains low, we encourage everyone to continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and to follow healthy habits. Hand washing with soap and water remains the best prevention.

The Florida Department of Health is responding to COVID-19. In an effort to keep Florida residents and visitors safe and aware about the status of the virus, the Department is issuing regular updates as information becomes available. The Department will be sending this press release update every morning, seven days per week. Up-to-date information can be found here.
- Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a public health emergency designating the Florida Department of Health as the lead state agency to coordinate an emergency response.
- On March 7, 2020, the Governor directed the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) to activate to level two to coordinate statewide preparedness and response to the new coronavirus in Florida.
- Florida is under a declared Public Health Emergency and not an Executive Emergency Order.
- The Florida Department of Health is responding to COVID-19. In an effort to keep Florida residents and visitors safe and aware about the status of the virus, the Department is issuing regular updates as information becomes available.
- The Florida Department of Health is advising all individuals who traveled on a river cruise on the Nile River in Egypt in February 2020 to self-isolate for 14 days following their date of return to the United States. Several passengers in the United States recently developed symptoms and have been confirmed to be infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), including two positive cases in Florida.
International Travel Advisory
The Florida Department of Health is advising all individuals who have traveled internationally to follow the new CDC guidelines, summarized below:
- Level 3: Mandatory 14-day self-isolation and practice social distancing upon return to the United States. Social distancing includes avoiding going out in public and close personal interactions. If you become symptomatic, immediately self-isolate and contact your county health department or health care provider.
- Level 2 and Cruises: Monitor your health and limit interactions with others for 14 days after returning to the United States. If you become symptomatic, immediately self-isolate and contact your county health department or health care provider.

The Town of Oakland is continuing to monitor information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health officials regarding Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
If you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, please seek medical care. Contact your health care provider by phone ahead of your visit and tell them about your recent travel and symptoms.

The CDC reminds everyone to practice proper hygiene habits to help prevent the spread of this and other respiratory illnesses like the flu. We encourage community members to:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
- Stay home when sick.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Cough or sneeze into an elbow or use a tissue and place immediately in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using household cleaning sprays or wipes.
The Town and The Oakland Avenue Charter School will continue to follow CDC recommendations to prevent infection of respiratory viruses like the flu and COVID-19. If your child gets sick with flu-like or respiratory symptoms, in most cases, they should stay home except to get medical care. Please follow standard practices for communicating any absences to your child’s teacher.
