As a pedestrian safety measure, the Town has installed a crosswalk, signage and a rapid-flashing beacon at the mid-block crossing on Oakland Avenue near Sansparilla Road. The beacon will be activated on Monday, May 17. These enhanced measures, which include lowering the speed limit to 35 mph earlier this year, are to encourage drivers to slow down for the safety of pedestrians and bicycle riders.
Florida law states drivers must yield – slow down or stop – for a pedestrian crossing the street in a crosswalk, whether traffic signal controls are present or not, according to Best Foot Forward. It is the responsibility of both drivers and walkers to educate themselves about Florida’s driver yield laws to ensure the safety and comfortability of all road users.
