Recently a resident of S. Tubb Street became the victim of a
theft as the result as a scam. This type of scam is generally perpetrated
on a number of victims in the same general area. At this point, we only
have one known victim. In this case the residents were home and two
subjects came to the door and advised that they were working on the municipal
water system. They asked if they could come inside and check
the water faucet in the kitchen and bathrooms to see if some dye that was put
in the line had come through. After a few minutes in the bathrooms and
the kitchen they advised the system was functioning properly, thanked the
residents and left the home.
It wasn’t until much later on the same day that it was
discovered that a wallet had been taken from the victim’s purse. This
type of scam is not all that uncommon. The reason for needing to enter
the home can be a number of things; plumbing issues, cable company issue,
electric company issue…….. Any number of scenarios can be conveyed to
unsuspecting homeowners. Once in the home one of the suspects will
distract the residents while the other commits the theft. The
suspects in the case alluded to above were two white males with dark hair,
driving a white passenger van without markings.
If you have been contacted by subjects meeting this description
who requested to enter your home to check the plumbing or any of the other
reasons given above, please contact Detective Angela Campbell at
407-656-9797. Please be cautious when granting anyone you don’t know
entry in to your home. When in doubt, refuse admittance until you can
verify who they are and why they are there. You should be able to do so
by either calling whatever company they represent or in the case of municipal
workers, by calling Town Hall.
